We sang a lot in my house when I was growing up. Funny old songs that you've probably never heard of like "Sippin' Cider" or "Grandfather's Clock" or maybe "Titanic". It wasn't just my mom, her sisters taught their kids too so sometimes in strange moments my cousins & I have sung them together. My mom & her sisters even sing them in parts and rounds. These are all old songs their mom and grandma taught them. This is a part of my childhood that I look back on and it makes me smile. It may seem strange to many, but it's part of my family, part of my history.
There's this silly little ditty, a poem of sorts, that my mom, or maybe even my grandma, told me once as a child and I found it interesting enough to memorize. For some reason or another I was reminded of it yesterday, which reminded me of all those songs we used to sing, and it makes long for a different time and place....and it makes me smile.
One dark morning in the middle of the night,
Two dead boys got up to fight.
Back to back they faced each other,
Drew their swords and fought each other.
A deaf policeman heard the noise
And came and shot the two dead boys.
If you don't believe this story is true,
Ask the blind man, he saw it too.

Walking Her Home
Okay, so I'm in a really sappy mood and one of my favorite sappy songs is 'Walkin' Her Home' by Mark Schultz, a contemporary Christian artist. If you haven't heard of him, you should head over to youtube and do a search...WOW! He does a lot of songs with a story. He used to be a youth minister and one of his first songs is about a kid in his youth group called "He's My Son" about a little boy who's sick. He also has one called "Letters from War" and "I AM" just to name a few. The first (and only) concert we've taken Kabe to was a Mark Schultz and Big Daddy Weave. The song below was debuted at that concert & is old now so many of you will have heard it, but it will be new to some of you. This is a true story about his next door neighbors when he was a youth minister. It's called "Walking Her Home."
I know this is just a song, but see, it isn't. It's a song written about real people, real love. It makes me so thankful for my husband and although I am content and want to live each day for now and not miss these moments, I look forward to growing old together with him too.
